Home Bleaching (At-Home Teeth Whitening)

Home bleaching is becoming increasingly popular in Hong Kong. It is an excellent method for patients who wish to improve their smile and remove yellow stains from the comfort of their own home.
A dentist will custom-make unique whitening trays for each patient and provide guidance on how to perform home bleaching safely. While custom-made trays are more expensive than over-the-counter retail whitening products, the results are significantly more effective.
Home Whitening Procedure:
- Apply Whitening Gel to the Tray: Squeeze a continuous bead of gel into the custom tray, positioned at the front or the bottom half of the teeth. Each tray requires approximately 1/2 to 1/3 of a syringe of gel. Store the remaining gel in a cool place for the next use.
- Insert the Tray: Place the tray in your mouth and tap it gently to ensure it fits snugly against both sides of the teeth. Wear it for the duration instructed by your dentist. Generally, gel concentrations range from 10% to 35%; the lower the concentration, the longer the wearing time.
- Remove Tray and Brush: Take off the tray and use a soft toothbrush to clean away excess gel. Rinse your mouth twice, taking care not to swallow any gel.
- Clean the Tray: Use a toothbrush and room-temperature water to clean the tray. You can then store it in the tray box and repeat the treatment the next day until the desired effect is achieved. If you experience significant sensitivity, stop the treatment and contact our medical staff.
FAQs for Home Whitening:
Should I brush my teeth immediately after whitening? No. Whitening agents can make the tooth surface temporarily fragile. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing and use a mild mouthwash.
How should I care for my teeth during and after whitening? Avoid staining drinks and foods such as coffee, tea, and red wine. Avoid smoking during the treatment period. Continue to brush and clean your teeth as usual after each session.
How long does it take to see results? Due to the lower concentration of the whitening agent, it usually takes several days to a few weeks to see noticeable results. Consistency and following the correct method are key.
How long should I wait to eat after whitening? It is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes before eating to ensure the whitening agent is fully absorbed. Rinse with water after eating. Additionally, wait 30 minutes after eating before brushing to avoid damaging enamel that may have softened due to food acidity.
